c) 3 ticking nuclear time bombs of the 21st century
Before I begin, I ought to laid down a brief backgrounds for this series of writings. This page here continues the online exposure of the contents and supplementary materials of two long letters (First Letter 1989 and Second Letter1990) I had presented to the former senior Chinese leader Deng Xiao Ping and the same were later presented to UN (1995) on the occasion of UN's 50th Anniversary. The writings were motivated by a series of unusual events during the entire 1980s, such as events leading to Hong Kong's change of sovereignty, the student turmoil at Beijing's Tien An Men, the inflamed conflict in Gaza, and later the out break of war at the Gulf. These events appeared to have some correlations with the timing and arrivals of the Halley comet. Having checked a few occurrences of this comet's visits, e.g. 1910 and1985, and the corresponding past world events, the writer was alarmed by the thought that a strong enough comet energy periodically invading the solar system might have added extra disturbance to periodic social and political upheavals or diseases. The writer decided to dig in... Later, continued observations indicated vaguely that the cosmic influence could appear to come in two waves, an incidental wave and a reactive wave, such as the 1st and 2nd World Wars (1914 and 1939), or 1st and 2nd Gulf Wars (1991 and 2003), or Spanish Flu (1910) and the HIV/Aids (1980s), also now the Bird Flu scare. Even the series of suicidal waves of whales, humans and suicidal behaviours of politicians seemed to relate to the strange events during the periods of comet visit. The writer was motivated to compile a list of Halley comet's visits and corresponding events dating back over 2000 years, and decided to put the said letters and observations online, because those letters were inspired by the possible influence of Halley comet, and should be exposed in the Internet....
The Tien An Men disturbance in 1989 and the large street demonstrations of 2004 and 2005 in Hong Kong were also two waves related to movements of democracy. In Hong Kong the demand was organized by a particular group of political activists, although the local government has been working hard to formulate the details of a more representative and more futuristic structure for democracy as well as taking a careful approach towards the final democratic process. One outspoken local church leader whose constant demand that mainland church leaders should only be appointed and controlled by Rome, and whose public wish for Vatican to get tough with mainland authorities started me thinking (only one wonders how does a religion get tough in modern days with a government, since it's not likely to start another Heavenly Father, Heavenly Brother and Heavenly Peace Kingdom). At any rate when this leader declared his intent to get other similar churches to participate in the march for Western democracy, his possible influence and eventual consequence in this vicinity prompted this writer to analyze some essential historical backgrounds about religions, also about democracy and the non-stop struggles, conflicts or unrest between the political parties within the Western style democracy globally.
Because of the massive scale of political energy passed down from well over 2000 years of ancient Western history both in religions and politics, and their possible further developments in the present age of nuclear weapons, in this series of writing, I shall describe in details 3 ticking time bombs, namely political religion, democracy and the nuclear bomb (Note: When I say "Political religion" I refer to the ancient Roman history when religion was first created and fashioned by imperial politics as a means to rule, which then passed down to give the oppressive and absolute rule of religion in the Dark Age. Such massive history also makes the use of modern day religion and politics still inseparable). The origin of this series was a long page first written between Nov to Dec 2005, then more materials were added at different intervals. That page had become much too long and would have to be trimmed and cut to size. Alternatively, it would have to be split into separate pages. In fact, the writer had thought of canceling the entire series from the web all together. However, in view of the presently still escalating bloody conflicts in the Middle East as well as the presence of Bird Flu scare among us, I have decided not to cut or cancel these writings, irrespective of whether my theory about the comet influence is right or not,. Instead I will divide the original page into the following sub-pages, i.e.1) Democracy. 2). Political Religion. 3) The Nuclear Bomb... I consider these are the 3 time bombs in the 21st century Space and Nuclear Weapon Age. Then in addition, I will add another page about the suspected influence of Halley Comet, i.e. the d) Halley Comet page. The separation of original writings into 4 pages makes reading much easier and clearer...
Now in regard to my theory about Halley comet's visit, I will add a few words here. My theory that Halley's visit could have influenced the birth of musical geniuses might very well be correct. In fact, I had highlighted the importance of an approaching surge of musical interests in my letter to Deng Xiao Ping in 1989. I actually called China to get ready for music. Now looking back, China has produced in this short period a large contingent of musical talents, including a couple of young pianist with international acclaims. For a nation previously unfamiliar to Western classic music that's an extraordinary achievement. Yet, in the early 90s it was still easier for China to start on classical music. But that's not all, I have just noted from the popular TV news program "60 Minutes" about three clearly blind and disabled American children, named Rex, Rachel and Derek (interviewed by Leslie Stow), all 3 of them possess inexplicable musical genius at the piano. In the meantime, all over the globe music of all descriptions have become a heightened worldwide phenomenon and culture, since Halley comet's arrival... However, if my theory about music is correct, then my theory about other Halley effects ought to be correct as well, because the heightened surge of musical interests is an important clue or key to the Halley influence. This would also mean that the present Bird Flu scare and the wave of suicidal bombers, as well as other international tensions are also subject to the time limits of Halley comet's visit. Perhaps even the abnormal weathers and global warming are also related. If so, the let's hope that this period of Halley influence would soon be over.. In that same First Letter of 1989, I had also highlighted the extreme importance of computer invention and called it The Second Invention of Printing Press. Now both Computer and Music have become the phenomena of our days. Please read more in that page and also the page d) Halley Comet...
These days, every time you switch on the Radio or TV or Internet, you hear somebody trying to sell you something. The next thing you will hear is about the urgency of global warming, or about how many tens of millions are dying of HIV/Aids. You might hear about some leaders of super power nations threatening to put nuclear options on the table, or about the fear of nations developing nuclear energy research or weapons. Almost every day you hear about how many bombs going off or how many people dying that day in Iraq, or about wanting to spread democracy to the whole world (of course these days it's an accepted practice to install democracy or change or create a government in someone else's country by force). Also almost monthly, you hear news of troubles, disputes, corruptions, demonstrations, riots, impeachments and bloodsheds about some Presidential elections or Presidential corruptions somewhere in the world, or some political parties against some other parties, or about how many terrorists bombing themselves to death that day (they call suicidal bombers "Terrorists" but no one asks why a human being becomes willing to give up his own life) causing possible civil wars or for whatever they believe. Yes, these days, apart from the military invasions, the rests of global unrest that keep the United Nations busy, sending troops or observers, are the troubles in some democracies or elections. If you take the accusations, riots, unrests, the military invasion and other troubles about democracies out of news cast, the reporters would have to go about without meals...
Then there is, from time to time, news about what the Catholic Pope says or criticizes, or about what some religious tradition wears to cover the face.... Here in Hon Kong, the streets are full of signs and adverts that tell you Gospel is only truth in your life, and that if you believe in it you will have ever lasting life (they don't even know for sure if they will life through the next year), and that Jesus is your only lord and master (a huge neon sign says that on top of a building right in the center of Hong Kong).... I began to write these pages the moment Hong Kong TV reported that certain local catholic church leader was about to convince other Christian churches to join the march demanding Hong Kong government to install Western Democracy... You would have thought that Catholic politics had brought to Europe centuries of Dark Age, as well as centuries of bloodshed by the Crusaders, and that they might have gotten tired of politics or such unforgettable memories by now... Or at least the Catholic church would use democratic system in their own papal elections, or officially allow females to be priests... What's more, unless the Vatican respects other nations' freedom of appointment for Bishops, or their own choice of religious policies, there can never be "Religious Freedom"... Am I right or wrong?... Actually, I also promoted Democracy in my letter to Deng Xiao Ping in 1989, but I must admit now that I feel quite guilty about it. The reasons for that are fully illustrated in the above mentioned 2 pages, namely 1) Democracy and 2) Political Religion. Because they are both strongly related to the power that has ruled trillions of human lives during the whole Piscean Age (this age is explained at the end of this page).
As to the 3rd ticking time bomb, see page 3) The Nuclear Bomb, I need to emphasize here again that no amount of solar, wind, water or plantation oil energy is going keep up with the growing human population and human demands of energy. Sooner or later clean nuclear energy will have to be needed by all. This means we are all going to enter the proper but dangerous nuclear age, by releasing nuclear energies from hydrogen, uranium, plutonium and more, whether we like it or not! It also means that every military or ideological aggression, political or religious, initiated by politicians is going to bring all humans steps closer to that nuclear 3rd world war, which is probably also inevitable. One more invasion, and the whole world could be up in nuclear arms race. Perhaps the entire Nuclear Proliferation Treaty could break down... If I am right about the possible influence of comet disturbances, then even a small change in cosmic energy could turn human or animal brains berserk to commit suicides or start wars (Please read page d) Halley comet's visits and possible influence )...
In fact, in any of futuristic wars, nuclear bombs or other mass destructive weapons could descend from satellites, or detonated from large trucks, tourist coaches, transport vans, ocean or river boats, disguised passenger planes, even using a nearby residential house for the big bombs, and for the smaller or suitcase nuclear bombs by any cars, containers or packages, or suicidal humans or cloned humans or by modern remote control devices, even hand held phones, and all could happen while people are sleeping. No palace, or Presidential residence, House of Congress or Parliament, or large churches, even nuclear power stations or nuclear reactors will be safe. After that radioactive pollution could still reduce the rest of millions to half dead and half alive. Aircraft carriers could turn into huge coffins. Military camps in foreign lands could become large burial grounds over night.... No one would ever know who or what's done it. All your need to do to get it is to make others hate you enough to do it! Or when there is enough hate to go around, some friends might just lend or give away a few bombs to do it... I hope these words would help to change a few things, or clear some clouded heads that are holding the fate of nations and their people in hand. Let me also hope that these words would help the current negotiation with North Korea about nuclear weapons...
There is an instinct of self sacrifice deeply embedded in the basic nature of species. This instinct sometimes shows up in maternal and paternal behavious. If a bee hide is intruded and its nation threatened, an individual bee will sting the intruder, and to make sure its weapon really strikes deep in its enemy the bee will pull out its own guts, wobble away and die. In other species, such as human beings, this self sacrificial instinct needs to be persistently and continuously invoked in order to activate, but in time and in excess, it can and will explode beyond logic and out of control. When life loses its usual value, then anything can happen. So, if the bee acts like a suicidal bomber or a terrorist, than it's nature's terrorism, because the same instinct is in all species. It only needs to be invoked to the extend of explosion, perhaps nuclear explosion, because at which time, even the most unexpected behaviour can become a natural course of action. I hope this example also helps international negotiations and save a few lives too. Because of the nuclear bombs, the 21st nuclear century and beyond will not be the same as any previous centuries. Domestic or civil wars do not involve nuclear weapons, but any international wars could eventually lead to nuclear wars. It appears enough people are not afraid to die like a stinging bee, or have already reached their endurance limits. So, in the 21st century anybody who starts war should be prepared for all the consequences, including full scale nuclear world war, or just nuclear suicidal stings...
Within this 21st century much more devastating weapons, plus newest means of automatic delivery by humans or devices could wipe out a large human community, or a decision making center in seconds. Once a decision is made to cripple retaliations, massive devastations could happen simultaneously in many vital locations. If humans are going to sleep nights and children are to grow up, then it's now time to care, not just about the extinction of animals, but the crippling destruction of nations, the planet earth and a large portion of humanity. Wars and aggressions always escalate. Not just one capital city but all large cities, not just one country but every nation on earth stands the same chance to be blasted back to stone age. So, Presidents and Prime Ministers, please stop dreaming about victories and past glories! From here on, those commercial or private arms makers must close down. Above all, pure intelligence and humane qualities of political leadership are urgently needed... I write this not just for the good of all people, but for myself and my family as well! Because with the rapid advance of medical science, any average person with some means today can expect to live 100 years or more. So within our life time or our children's, the things I have described above could happen So, from here on, every human on earth has the duty to warn and protest against aggressions and wars. Every man or woman has the right to protect his own family from those horrible possibilities. This is not just something for the United Nation to handle or argue it out. This concerns every man, woman and child, because once it starts, no one knows how it would end... I don't believe that I am the only one who cares and would speak out..
I also don't believe that one or two warnings are going to be enough. So, let me say it again. The 1st World War was begun by the assassination of one mere Austrian Archduke Francis Ferdinand. Then Germany lost the war, so the 1st World War laid the groundwork for the 2nd World War few years later, which then led to nuclear explosion in Hiroshima. The consequence of starting a war does not always become apparent right away. Hatred can surface decades or centuries later to seek release... The next war is not going to be just 2 atom bombes, it's going to be hundreds or thousands of much bigger nuclear bombs. The press and entertainment medias have been used timelessly in the past to arouse patriotism in the mass and more sentiments for bloodshed. That's another sure road to disaster. Those who start war should be responsible for stopping it, for keeping it within control, or for accepting the consequences, and not asking people to bear or to expand it. Whatever lost already incurred do not enlarge it further, because there is no such a thing called "victory" in nuclear age. Illusion of victory in nuclear age can bring devastation for the nation and for humanity. Greed for advantage or profit of war can land people in quick sand, and then there will be no end of trouble for decades to come... Any ideological, political, religious or military aggressions would bring mankind closer towards the 3rd nuclear world war...
So now let me sum up. Actually the human nature, which is still progressing under evolution, consists of 3 basic parts. The instinctive desirous nature, which is raw and still powerful, the charitable nature, which includes instinctive love and compassion, and the rational nature, which is still growing. What makes humans more evolved is the rational nature. I believe humans did not make wars against each other in prehistoric days, because their tribal communities were small, and all had to unite hard to scratch a living from nature. Besides, they had little possessions to fight for and no suitable weapons to fight with, which allowed humans to survive and to evolve more rational nature. Those basic natures are still in us and still evolving. It depends on which part is energized and promoted. That means you may encourage the desirous nature and promote it under all kinds of Freedom slogans, or you may also promote the charitable nature that makes family or communal life and called it Tradition or Culture, which may be different but valued by each people. You may also promote rational nature and make, peace, mutual respect and prosperity and call it Civilization. Of course you may also promote wars and slaughters and call it Politics. It all depends on what kind of future you really want... Such efforts of promotion are sometimes called Education, and other times called social, religious and political Belief, or Press, or Media Freedom depending on who you are.
When human civilization entered the Bronze Age, the weapon sword was invented, and killings began. A civilization built on human blood and rule by cruelty was also started. Today, books, TVs and movies are full of glorification of the great monuments, great constructions and great conquests of the past. Gradually primitive and barbaric cruelties of the past are beautified. Historical inhumanities are lost in the cover of cosmetics. Young generations have no way of learning from the true evolutionary past. Therefore many think that historical wars and inhumanity are something to be admired and be proud of. On top of that, nowadays 9 movies out of 10 are full of sex, violence, scandals, drugs, murders and horrors. Corpses in TV "Crime Lab" programs are becoming more gruesome by the minute, but they put those nightly display of ghastly death and education of violent murders under entertainment, the entertainment of corps or of death, because there are hardly any stories in those programs, just plain exposure to grisly dead corps. Day by day and bit by bit this generation and the next generation of humans are being contaminated and educated with the ideas and enjoyment from movies or Internet films of drugs, violence, sex, homo-sex, child sex, prison cruelty, killing of fellow humans and bloodshed or tasty crimes of any sort. In barely half century, inch by inch, the human civilization has been brought back to the exact days of Roman Colosseum, where killings of humans were enjoyed and entertained. Only modern Colosseum is in our living room. And nowadays simple shooting or killing is not entertaining enough, they have to cut up corpses and experiment with them in gruesome crime-lab movies almost nightly in your TV. Naturally the appetite is growing and becoming even more ghastly and blood thirsty by the day, so you can almost imagine what our grandchildren would want to enjoy in few decades from now. Thanks to the Internet, the movie studios, the Oscar winning movie directors and the politics for teaching everyone the enjoyment of bloodshed, killing and the love of war! They call the promotion of criminal and immoral civilization "Freedom", while freedom is what people living under military occupations are dying for...
Homosexuality, too, becomes a legalized fashion and a popular way of life. Actors and media entertainers are becoming national or social leaders. Comedian politics or political comedians are becoming heroes and archetype for politics and propaganda. It has become an accepted phenomenon that politicians always cheat or lie and never talk of conducts or morality. Electoral corruptions and frauds and are rampant across the world. Practically every month somewhere some democracies are in violent disputes or dire troubles or bloodshed that keeps UN busy sending peace keeping troops. Political religions are still politically orientated or still seeking control of other nation's religious administration. The press and those world wide radios hide behind Freedom of Speech or Human Rights to emerge once more as propaganda or Cold War tools. Private arms maker hide behind politicians to turn out ever increasing streams of weapons to be used or sold or to turn other nations into bloody hell. This is the reality now, but the nuclear confrontation is brewing up fast!...
What do all these trends and phenomena mean? And where are people heading for? Philosophers and moral leaders have become extinct species. There seems to be no need to bomb anybody back to stone age, because human civilization is already back to stone age. And yet politicians continue to pump into their young minds "Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country". In other words "Don't question right or wrong, just do it", or "Don't think, just go and kill or get killed"... Isn't that the suicidal bombers are doing everyday for their own country or their people? But of course those are "Terrorists"! How does one proclaim victory when on the one hand your opponents don't even blink an eye when they detonate their waist bombs, on the other when your own people do not want you to go on? If thousands of humans are willing to commit suicide today because of what you do, how can you be sure they would hesitate to make a nastier bomb to put it in your home two decades from now?... But this escalating energy, this trend, this persistence and this acceleration can have only one final outcome, which is "Collective Suicide", and this civilization is a "Collective Terrorism". Then soon, very soon indeed, the age will be an age of "Nuclear Terrorism", or "Nuclear Suicide"... Or does anyone real think he can stop the globalization of nuclear technology or the coming of a full nuclear age? That's why wisdom and humane qualities of national leaders are badly needed for the future, and not their popularity, entertaining abilities, or their love of power and war. Therefore such leaders should only be elected by a large body of selective, best qualified electorates on behalf of people and not controlled by political parties, nor by the emotional faceless public. Because only the wisest and most humane leaders can bring us and our children safely pass this century, let alone the increasingly dangerous nuclear age...
I still need to highlight the following though. Press and radios are weapons, although these weapons can have both edges sharp. But don't be fooled to think they are benign and above restrictions, because people used to make big and dangerous "Cold Wars" with them, now and then they still do! Democracy is also a weapon. It can be used to break up a traditional culture or a nation into fractions and fighting parties, which can cause violence, bloodshed and even civil wars. The basic effect of a nation split by political parties is a society dominated by powerful groups fighting for the power or control of the land and its people, unless those political parties are willing to collude and to share the bounty of rule. Such a phenomenon does exist in many nations, in that practically all nice, comfortable and influential jobs in essential government services are shared between political party members. Meanwhile, in some countries, having split a nation into power grabbing parties, one of the more corrupt or desperate parties may be quite happy to be protected, propped up, or protected, or even bought by an undeclared foreign ally. Such a relationship, which is a political Trojan Horse, could plunge the land into chaos. And such chaos may end up in violent civil wars, or demand for independence, and may even be used to control or blackmail the land. Therefore unless political parties are eliminated and election is made to base on wider and more even representation, otherwise the real hope and purpose of democracy are defeated and warped, then democracy becomes intrinsically a means or an invitation for national conflict. The extent of conflict of course depends on the intelligence, the maturity of the people (or the faceless mob). It may also depend on the state of economic and political stability of the subject nation. But it could split the nation with unstoppable turmoil or break up its existing social coherence and belief in tradition, or plunge all peace into hell...
All these things need to be said, because almost every month some political parties somewhere are turning their land into a complaining, cheating, corrupt, rioting, even killing battle field. And the nuclear age world is gradually turning into a moral-less power grabbing civilization. In such an age and such a civilization, there is an urgent need that any decision to initiate external wars must be passed by 2/3 majority of Congress or Parliament both for offensive and defensive wars, because if there is sufficient ground, then there is no reason not to pass the resolution. History shows that sentiments and fevers of war or for national defense can be pumped up from any crisis, false or true. Intentions to heighten national sentiments always path the way for wars, and once it starts, it cannot stop. What's more, once action is taken, it must be ruthless. The First World War led to 2nd World War. Second World war then led to nuclear devastation. Those wars were more or less generated or accompanied by inflaming press, medias, political rhetoric and by arousing national sentiments. Soon the lives of young people are treated as bullets. Sometimes their blood can mean something, other times they are meaningless! In short, some politicians are empowered by mandate to play and gamble with people's life. Wars can and do burn like wild fires out of control. As powerful as Hitler once was, he could still fail. Therefore, the authority to generate wars must restrained and contained well before the next world war, because no one can predict the final outcome and the chain effect of nuclear wars...
And yet, there is another civilization, which no one seems to know any of it. So let me tell it! Well over 4300 years ago, in another part of the globe, called China, emperor Yau heard that somewhere country folks were praising the conduct and behaviours of a young man by the name of Shun. Yau decided to call Shun to the palace and train him with the role of leadership and responsibilities, instead of his own sons. Then later, upon satisfaction, Yau indeed abdicated in favour of the young Shun. And when Shun became old, he would continue the tradition by abdicating his throne to Yue because Yue had worked 13 years and saved countless lives by curbing floods and channeling 7 rivers into sea. Later Yue wanted to return the throne to Shun's son, but people flocked to request Yue's son to lead, because he cared very much about people... These were the days over 4000 years ago when Chinese civilization was founded on wisdom and humane quality of leaders, and the tradition was passed on and praised in songs and poems for many later centuries.
It was the times when the State would divide lands into farming communes, whereby 8 families would share a large square plot of land divided into 9 equal parts, similar to the symbol " # ". Each family would tend to one of the 8 peripheral divisions of land for their own sustenance, and together they would work the central division to yield crops for the State as an early form of taxation. Such philosophy and legacy, which ruled Chinese civilization and remembered in history, were always centered on care for people, with rationality and humane quality in ruler-ship... Then of course, sooner or later a totally spoiled, or corrupt or self-indulgent ruler would appear at end of a declining dynasty, usually after many centuries. But when that happened the Chinese folks would rise and replace the rotten ruler with one of quality and of popular consent. Thus the philosophic and spiritual energies that fundamentally sustained 5000 years of Chinese civilization were humane qualities, never brutal strength, or absolute oppression, or pumped up sentiments for war or conquests. Let me give you an example:-
[Roughly 3000 years ago....One fiefdom named Zhou was often raided by neighbors. Its people wanted to fight, but Zhou's aged leader told them that he had no wish to see people's fathers and sons killed. He then led his people to desert their home land and relocate their domicile to the remote area of Mount Ji. Little did the old leader know that as news spread about his cared for the people, other folks far and near would render him great respect. So more and more people flocked to Zhou from other fiefdoms, causing Zhou to grow in manpower and resources... Zhou eventually took over the rule of entire China, which lasted over 800 years to become the longest dynasty in Chinese history...
During the long rein of Zhou dynasty Confucius (ca 2500 BC) was born. Confucius passed down his philosophy of “the Middle Way“
, which mainly broadened rationality and inhibited extremism and excess in behaviors. The philosophy of Middle Way would expand to give a civilization without the desire of invasion and external conquests, but with strong national defense, which then resulted in the construction of the Great Walls (ca 2300 BC). The Confucian ideal path the way to the Chinese parallel of Western democratic aspirations and much beyond. But they did not call it democracy because it was not a political structure but a philosophy that went into the brains and the hearts of rulers and commoners alike... Confucian philosophy encompasses the following steps of attainments :- Analysis of matters - Search for knowledge - Growth through self conditioning - Coalescence of family relationship - Administration of national welfares, and ultimately the responsibility to achieve peace and equality of humanity. Notice the way to achieve universal peace and equality is based on search for inner conditioning and wisdom of each individual. No power grabbing or orating politicians and no make-belief religious rulers. Confucian philosophy was delivered and promulgated down Chinese civilization by this writer's blood ancestor Zeng San, the Stem Sage of Chinese history roughly 2500 years ago.] Please read full story in page 6) A proven 5000 years old unbroken chain of DNA and page 5) Story of Yin-Yang and the earliest correlation to cosmology
Then
in Tang dynasty (ca 620 AD) Chinese imperial governments began to
centralize the legacy of humane rule by instituting a system of examinations in
order to select national and district officials. Examinations were staged in known
intervals through district exams, county or provincial exams and national exams,
which was staged in the capital. These exams produced progressive grades of
qualification taken from a vast sea of scholars, where candidates would expand
their knowledge, their principles and ambitions in governance at their own will. But
because vacancies in government were always few compared with numbers of
scholars, the competition were high and resultant qualities were naturally high
too! Because the system was the best expression of democracy and the results
were quality in governance, this system, called "Raised by Exam"
,
was
passed down history without interruption
until 1910, the last of Chinese imperial dynasties. Such a system and philosophy
coupled with thousand of years of belief and legacy in humane leadership gave
fundamental social equality and peace. It didn't matter who or what governed the
Chinese society, such philosophy and wisdom took root in every single person,
which gave humanitarian relationship in Chinese society, as well as peace that
rulers and commoners all enjoyed. It also eliminated the extremes of conflicting
political party struggles and inflammation for desire of external conquest...
Then hell broke loose! The waves of demand for Western democracy plundered thousands of years of Confucian civilization, resulting in a Republic China, where two political parties and two political ideals crashed and bloodshed began. The Nationalist Party (KMT) did everything possible to annihilate the Communist Party, even while Japanese planes and soldiers were rampaging China. In the end, it took the hands of a very traditional scholar leader, namely Mau Tse Tong, to put together the nation into one piece again, but of course, not without huge resolution, enormous hardship and great sacrifices. When the Nationalist Party retreated to the Province of Taiwan, the Communist government did not follow to annihilate them, instead they repeatedly tried to lure their return back to mainland. I am glad to see that the recent years both sides of Chinese people have followed obvious wisdom and desire for reunification, (except a few who still think they can trust and rely on foreign supports). It is obviously something to be congratulated, because no wise person would believe that a separate tiny Taiwan could possibly exist right next to the mainland and prosper without the goodwill and support from mainland China for very long. Alone the deep roots of ancestral blood, culture and language would soon raise the Taiwan Chinese people's desire to return to homeland. Let alone that fact that Taiwan is far too small to defense herself against massive international aggressions, including economic or criminal invasions, including politics, stock market, industries, medicines, drugs or corruptions and other natural disasters, because today everything is integrated in massive scale that require cooperation and support between people, market and governments.
However, again the recovery of China is based on care, quality and wisdom of leadership, as well as the Civilization of Middle Way. Chinese people love to mediate between extremes. Every single Chinese out of China, and there are many, be he a politician, a scholar, businessman or ordinary people, none of them carries the political odor of bullying, intimidation, or intent of aggression. It seems so easy to build a rapid growth of economy through hard work and trade without having to make wars or make victories on someone. In fact, wars often cost more than gain. One thing is sure, wars build hatred for the very least of two generations. One leader's victory is often built on untold sufferings of thousands, if not millions. And yet, no one knows how the outcome of wars could evolve into, or what could end up finally. The last two world wars were good examples. Another thing that all people can be sure of is :- In the next world war, the destruction will be so huge for all that any participating nation would not be able to recognize itself, even if it survives the war. So, joy riding coalition partners or participating Presidents or Prime Ministers, think what would become of you or your homeland when the fun is over, or think twice before you easily join the warring game... The purpose of these writings is not to hurt or offend someone, but if I could hurt or bash some leaders' head with it, just to wake them up, then I would be glad to do it! At any rate, in order to warn about further escalation of wars and the slow drive towards nuclear confrontation, the sounding of alarms should be loud, clear and unreserved. This is precisely what I am doing in these pages. My only fear is that all this is going to fall into deaf ears just the same! But if only I could bring to the attention of the world those millenniums or centuries of misbelieve and cause a tiny change or a ruffle, then my efforts are not wasted...
It is crazy to think that the advance of technology or civilization can be stopped or delayed by threats or by force. The more pressure is applied, the faster it will be stimulated to grow, because no one can stop the coming of an age. Energy is what drives our living standard and our civilization forward. We have barely entered the first half century of nuclear technology. With or without global warming the use of nuclear energy will burst the very moment we have learned how to control it safely and surely. This new and additional energy can enable the whole human race to live in comfort and in profusion. Already today humans can carry nuclear power to Mars for purposes of mining or excavation. In the next half a century humans will learn how to create food, water and air with it for living on moon or Mars. During the 2nd century of nuclear age, every life on earth and on solar planets will depend on nuclear energy to live and enjoy life. This is the real and destined future of human civilization. But we must first answer the following questions:-
Is democracy truly democratic? Or is it a cause and energy of political conflict, struggle and therefore human atrocity? How do we correct such a massive energy that has been spread to so many nations? How do humans search for strong, intelligent, but caring and humane leadership and eventually build a civilization welcome by all?
Did gods create man, or did man create gods? Was Jesus the son of God and rose to Heaven? And his God had confirmed and agreed to all that? Or was he just an anti-Roman historical figure? How and when did he acquire the identity of Pagan mythological figure Mithra? Would churches come clean each with their true and naked history, or alternatively how they had created such beliefs and planted in people's heart and soul for millenniums? Must the truth be revealed inhospitably from different historical records in different parts of the world? Is there a second life? How do we find the best and rightful alternative means to console the mind and spirit for all human souls without memories of cruel historical past and without modern cosmetics, and thus make surface the true charitable human nature? How do we correct the course and energy of such massive historic misguidance?
How do humans stop collective suicide through aggressions, wars and mutual conquests? How can human beings live with each other in peace, in trust and in mutual understanding for the coming many millenniums? If we cannot find a solution or answer to these questions, then we and our children are all living with three ticking nuclear time bombs!
Let me finish this page with the following summation. A few days ago (around 4th Apr 2007) I heard a conversation in BBC Radio Broadcast. Some one was wondering (and probably many others do as well) what had happened to all those know how and technology of ancient China that were once far above the rest of world, and why China had stopped further developments and even turned to become a withdrawn and inward looking nation? For after all, China did invent silk, porcelain, gun powder, compass and the printing press, as well as a couple of thousands other daily essentials... The answer is surprisingly simple!.. It was all because once upon a time, China had had quite enough of wars and had learned to hate bloodbath, so she turned and immersed herself in the ways of human relationship. Because humanity and thirst for blood are two different and opposite worlds... But I am running out of time and space here, so I will only flash back through early Chinese history with a brief glance and tell the long story with a few short words!
Well, to begin with, Chinese culture began during the Stone Age. By the time of Neolithic period, generally referred to as the beginning of 5000 years Chinese history, the culture had attained a remarkable degree of humanity and rationality, unique in early human history. History records that the earliest leaders or emperors would often abdicate in favour of younger men with commendable qualities. Such early historical incidents were recorded and recalled through out history all the way to modern time and had played an important role in shaping the subsequent development of Chinese civilization. Although Neolithic Chinese believed in the second life and worshipped ancestors, there was little or no belief in any almighty superhuman gods. Instead, the dawn of Chinese civilization was spent on observation of nature and cosmological phenomena, as well as in the building of a humane social structure, which was in fact, quite democratic (see page.# 5) Story of Yin-Yang and the earliest correlation to cosmology and page # 6) A proven 5000 years old unbroken chain of DNA ). Therefore the earliest recorded civilization was one of humanity and rationality.
However, around about 1500 BC the Bronze Age weapons greatly boomed in China. Bronze weapons brought along wars and territorial expansions, resulting in a decline of humanitarian belief. The last emperor of Shang dynasty was cruel and indulgent in corrupt personal pleasures, which called for revolution... The revolt came around 1050 BC when the rulers of Zhou dynasty won people's hearts by observing humanitarian conducts and took over China (see story of Zhou above). Zhou rulers installed fiefdoms to some descendants and other important achievers, and allowed those fiefdoms partial autonomy. For the first 300 years the country was nice, content and orderly, but as the tradition deepened the numbers of fiefdoms increased. The competitions between fiefdoms began, and the central government of Zhou gradually lost touch. China then entered into a second period of 300 years, which was called the "Period of Spring and Autumn". In this period, the children of fiefdom rulers grew in numbers along with competitions. Many of the educated or talented members of old families became impoverished and began to seek employments in richer fiefdoms. In this Spring and Autumn era new ideas and proposals sprouted and ripened, while some withered. All kinds of technologies were invented and many great principles, politics and social philosophies came into existence, including towards the later part of period, the Confucian philosophy.
This period was equivalent to the ancient Greek democracy in Athens, only the Chinese social and political ideologies were much more detailed and philosophical. But strangely enough both Athenian and Confucian political ideologies grew out of the human mind within the same 5-6th century BC, just as Bronze Age had sprung out of earth, both East and West, in about the 19th century BC.
After nearly 300 years of Spring and Autumn period, finally competition turned into strives between the states of fiefdoms, and the empire of Zhou slowly collapsed into a boiling battle field. Although the respect for the old Zhou ancestral traditions was so strong that it still remained somewhat intact for another 200 years, the central government had become totally ineffective. Thus the dynasty of Zhou officially lasted 800 years in all. This last 200 years was called the "Period of Warring States" in Chinese history. Imagine dozens of states broke out in wars here and there, mostly against one another, but sometimes in coalitions. China became a boiling pot of none stop wars that lasted a long and lingering 200 years. During this period of endless wars every political or military strategy and every technology possible was thought of, invented and deployed. Alliances and coalitions were formed and broken down in every possible political or military reasons and strategies. In the book of "Principles of Warring Strategy" by Sun Bin, written in this period, the methods and conditions described are in parts more thorough and penetrating than in modern warfare. Tales of great human endurance or heroic tales of this period continue these days to inspire modern novels and cinemas. Zhou dynasty was the 800 years when humanity, human ideologies and human conflicts were put to extreme test and had grown up to full maturity in China...
Imagine in that enclosed and limited land of ancient China, with gun powders everywhere and other war making implements, such as the direction finding compass for wars in fog or heavy snow, rockets and hot air balloon for aerial signal transmissions, even automation had already begun in China (See metal spring coils shown below), and plus all sorts of highly advanced warring strategies developed by a none superstitious but a highly practical, logical and sober civilization.
In short, in that enclosed and limited land, ancient China was potentially threatening to blow herself up with gun powders, just as the limited space of our globe is now ready to blow itself up with nuclear weapons.
Gold alloy spring coils and other mechanical devices made in Warring States period, unearthed from the tomb of a Marquis bearing same ancestral name as this writer.
Yet all this was none other than the natural consequence of Bronze Age (someday there will be a consequence of Nuclear Age too). It took the humans, both in China and in Roman Empire, about 1500 years to learn to make weapons, to use to kill, to organize, to conquer, to strategize and to dominate other humans, and then to end up in extreme cruelties as well as in equally cruel retaliations. Then by sheer unwillingness to withdraw or concede, the stubborn desire for victory would eventually lead to the brink of self annihilation. In other words for 200 years the Warring States would stimulated many discoveries of warring technologies and political or military strategies, then the excitement of blood and conquest would built it up to a climax, and ended in a collapse. Just like all things in the universe, they all end up in cycles of regenerations. Great civilizations rose and then collapsed in excess. In China, the great Zhou civilization and the subsequent state of blood bath were ended by the emergence of a strong man, Chin Chi Huang, in whose tomb now stand 8000 strong terracotta soldiers. The climax came when Chin Chi Huang conquered all other 6 remaining large states at the end of Warring States around 220 BC (the corresponding climax of Roman Empire)....
By this time, every Chinese man and family, even Chin Chi Huang himself, had had enough of wars! It was only possible that Chin unified China because everybody was already utterly weary of wars. But Chin was now faced with the impossible task of reorganizing and regenerating China after hundreds of years of separation since the advent of autonomous fiefdoms. He set about to unify the currencies, the languages, the laws etc., etc.. Anyone who did not comply was sent to work on building or completing the thousands of miles of Great Walls. He wanted to make sure that no wars would never ever occur again. So he rounded up those scheming and strategizing scholars or politicians, and finished them up in mass graves (although it was so told but no evidence of such massive burial grounds or human remains have been unearthed in the subsequent 2200 years). It was said that he had ordered historical books and records burnt, which was only partially rewritten some150 years later by historian Shi Ma-Chin and another lot was unearthed from hidden ground even later
At any rate, this powerful man not only had built the greatest structure on earth, he had also single handedly reunified 800 years of separated traditions and systems of autonomous fiefdoms. He could have buried 8000 men alive in his tomb but he apparently took the trouble to model their exact images from life. The exposure of his tomb's contents, if not stolen, could yet reveal some surprise... Anyway, he then gave himself the the title " The First Emperor of Chin" ("Chin" is the name of the dynasty and "Chi-Huang" depicts the "Opening Emperor", meaning that his dynasty would now pass down the generations forever).
(I have a strange feeling that he was more likely to have collected all historic records and kept them in his palace, the "Ah Pong Place", which could have been destroyed later. Some historical accounts or legends reported that when his palace was burnt to ground, the fire lasted 3 months. On the other hand, it's also possible that he could have also kept some in his massive tomb, perhaps the records of his ancestral achievements. I believe no men of intelligence and achievement would by nature or by habit destroy any useful information or records, which are the fundamentals, the foods and sustenance for an organized mind. And this man was a highly intelligent and methodical man. In fact he was the very pinnacle of that lost but highly advanced age. For a man who had wished to be the first emperor of an ever lasting empire, he would not have left his own successors and children without the complete historical records to base on and to refer to. The man was great enough to unify centuries of separated China and build the Great Walls, perhaps he was great enough and visionary enough to collect and unify historical records before his time, and then keep them in his burial chambers. Who knows, perhaps he had anticipated that someday there would be an Nuclear Weapon Age when the entire human kind would need those early experience and lessons learned in order to keep our home planet Earth in one piece and start concentrating on the conquest of the universe!
In fact, everything he did was to make sure that wars would never recur again, not even thinking of them. After 200 years of none stop wars, enough was enough for him and for all Chinese people of that time as well. The fact that it was he who had built the greatest defensive walls on earth 2200 years ago, also shows he had really had enough of wars, because he had no cause to fear any invasions, especially for a warrior who had just conquered his entire world. So the Great Walls were built and prepared for the distant future.. Ironically though, blood for blood, he could never have imagined that his mighty empire would be put down by common peasants, and ended in just over a decade in the hands of his son... )
Now what? What would the Chinese history now do after 200 years of none-stop bloody storms? It should be obvious that humans would begin to feel the values of peace and enjoyment of normal human relationship once again. This was especially true for China, because ever since the start of civilization, well before the discovery of bronze technology, Chinese leaders had ruled with popular consent and respect for ancestry and not by the indisputable power of almighty gods, nor by the sheer will of imperial power. It was no wonder why Confucian philosophy boomed right after the Warring States! How could anything else be more appropriate, after 200 years of war, than to start thinking of humanity and humanism? At any rate, Confucius philosophy was given more than a hundred years before the on set of Warring States, it was jus ripe enough and perfect for expansion in that world, which now needed so much peace and humanity, having forgotten long enough from those compassionate ancestral traditions, especially the boom of civilization during the era of Spring and Autumn.
Consequently Confucian ideals began with determining the right or wrong by introspection, then extend the resultant wisdom to the harmony of the family, the nation and the world?.. And yet all that could be understood and achieved directly from the conscious rational mind, without the illogical and subconscious control of the supernatural! So for thousands of years Chinese civilization developed along those lines, it puts conscientious thinking ahead of acting or believing. Then one day it was heard from the Silk Road that certain inner perfection was reached in India through religious contemplation, and so Buddhism was imported in the 7th century... But Buddhism only prospered in China because the Buddhist spiritual introspection coincided with the Chinese philosophical introspection. In fact, through out history, religious people in China use Buddhist contemplation to enhance health and longevity, rather than the quest for ever lasting life.
The philosophical appreciation of Buddhism was called the "Upper Ride", and the superstitious or ritualistic worship was the "Lower Ride". Thus the above said two schools of introspections reinforced one another, energizing everyday life, and the thoughts of wars and defense drifted farther and farther away, both in India and in China, until almost modern time. Confucius teaching was single handedly promulgated by one man alone, Zeng San
, whom Chinese history hailed as "Source Sage"
. Our Sage was in fact also the writer's clan ancestor (Note: The surname "Zeng" is the recently adopted officially spelling, but already many different spellings have used by different dialects in different provinces for a long time). When Confucius died, Zeng San, being the eldest disciple, was left to bring up the only remaining family, the young grandson of Confucius and to continue teaching and educating all other Confucius students. Another great sage and mentor, Meng Tze,
emerged from the school to promulgate Confucius ideals only some 130 years later. One of Source Sage's sagely behaviours was that he would ask himself three times each day "Have I been disloyal in my service to others? Have I not been trustful to my friends? Have I not practiced what I have learned?" So our ancestral house in China was called "House of Three Self Examinations", or "House of 3 Introspections"
.
So Confucian philosophy with limited help from the super philosophy of Buddhism and Daoism continued to energize the Chinese intellectual mind, each containing its own large degree of philosophy and logics. Chinese kids were always taught to think and not to believe what they were told. They still do! The peak of Chinese culture was reached during the Sung dynasty, roughly 1000 years ago, when not only philosophy boomed but the literally standard, also arts, reached all time high. By this time, the threat of wars was far away and forgotten, the innovative technologies has been replaced by the songs and praise of the human relationship and humane knowledge only. The Chinese society then was one made of silk, porcelain, poetry, literature, painting and celebrative fireworks. It was like heaven on earth, and would be told about far and wide..
While this was going on, no one had noticed that the Great Walls were rotting away and the winds of centuries of Chinese development had long reached her neighbour, Mongolia, and made her strong. Suddenly an unexpected storm, in the shapes of Genghis Khan and Kublai Khan, broke out completely without warning to awaken the whole sleepy human history. The Khans took both the East and the West with great ease and speed. But China was so beautiful and the Khans enjoyed China so much that they forgot all about their conquests in the West and made their home land Mongolia part of China. However, although the Khan's dynasty disrupted the near utopian stated of the Sung dynasty, the Mongolian dynasty lasted only 88 years when it was replaced by the Ming dynasty in 1368 AD. However, even during the Ming era the national strength and technological standard of China were still remarkable. The Ming rulers had repaired and reconditioned the old Great Walls and moved the capital to Beijing. It was also during the Ming dynasty that Zheng He explored the world 7 times with a fleet of some 300 cross continental ships all the way from Beijing to Africa.
Then something else happened!. The Ming historians recalled how wonderful it was in the good old Sung dynasty days, and scholars wanted it back. Well, who wouldn't? But it wasn't to be! Because Genghis Khan had already disturbed the sleeping human world. He had awakened the lifeless Dark Age in the Christian world and shown the Muslims world how to war and conquer. All that was happening, while oblivious to the scholars in China who could only dream of beauty and luxuries of the past but unable to relive it. Indeed time had changed and corruption had already crept in. Popular legend has it that a Ming General led the army of Manchuria into Beijing and changed the Chinese history from the dynasty of Ming into that of Ching. But because the change over was more or less bloodless, scholars continued their undisturbed dream in search for the perfect erudite culture. On top of that, because the new rulers were somewhat apprehensive of the size and potential might of the land, a number of measures were taken to divert possible initiatives of rebellion. Soldiers are degraded to become the least respected profession or social class. A system of exams to qualify for imperial civil services was devised, which included the so called "Bagu Wen", or "Eight-Part Essay" (a literary system of composition known for rigidity of form and structure, but poverty of substance and ideas). So for quite some time the national energies were totally directed to literary interests rather than physical exercise, or martial arts, or national defense. Emperor Chin-Lung of early Ching era was also a great lover of poetry, literature and calligraphy as well as a formidable scholar himself.
All these happened when the West was not only awakened from lifeless Dark Age, but was suddenly exposed to the entire facilities and knowledge of the past human world. Many of which had been passed from China and the Mongolians. It caused Europe to spring with explosive energy from total darkness into Renaissance and interests in military expansion. It was so easy, all it was needed to do was to attack the still dormant world with ships and machines made of iron, and if needed allies were coalesced, and took whatever they wanted, including inhumanly the slaves. Even the smallest European state found it easy to grab something. This massive awakening in military European practically relived the dramatic period and massive development of the "Chinese Warring States" except for three differences. Firstly, by that time of Warring States China had already inherited the knowledge from two and half millenniums of previous prudent and humanitarian experience and culture, while for the West it was all supernatural belief and military strength, and superstitious belief in Everlasting Life did serve to convince soldiers to die fighting. Secondly, competitions and wars had helped to stimulate allegiance between European nations, instead of strife between themselves, until the recent two Would Wars. Thirdly, the "Chinese Spring and Autumn" effect of boom and development for Europe came only after the effect of "Warring States" had manifested in mad rush for colonial possessions, and never halted ever since. It all happened too quickly. Therefore, there is a deep psychological complex or fear of reprisal that could yet give rise to many severe consequences.
Psych-complex and apprehension for reprisal easily turn into self righteousness and the love to condemn others, which then generate wrong kind of patriotism. Wrong kind of patriotism always give birth to arrogant dictators who can't wait to resort to aggressions and the cruelties of wars that often result in millions of broken souls and families. Cruelties of wars can also turn normal human beings into killing machines with equally cruel acts of retaliations. Such phenomena then regenerate the escalating cycles of even more psycho complex, more nauseous patriotism, more defensive measures and even more determined dictatorship. And eventually it leads to the slow making of a police state. However, history shows that clever people are repeatedly out witted. So finally one fine day, or one sleepy night, a terrific bomb could explode somewhere, and all those other millenniums or centuries old undiffused ticking time bombs would blow up with it.... It appears that human civilization still needs to pass through a process of humanitarian experience and lessons after all...
Besides, even today the reality between the past and the present, or between knowledge and make-belief remain controversial and unresolved, because part of the Dark Age is still alive and the remaining effect of slavery is still evident. Only recently we have heard of the mention of "Human Rights" or protection and care for animal rights. Indeed, only barely in the very recent time this completely unstoppable dawning of humanity is beginning to struggle to take shape through the entire human civilization.
"Human Rights" sounds just like the familiar Declaration of "All men are created equal", or the glorious "Democracy". But nothing much seems to have changed or advanced, as they remain just words or politics, not deeds, just as before! The difference between the historical reality of "3 daily self examinations" and the beginning of quest for "human rights" stands many worlds apart... The ultimate human civilization must be one that is not only psychologically healthy, logically true, but also one that answers all human injustices and takes care of all human yearnings from within. At least, not one that is designed to create civil disputes or civil wars and millions of homeless refugees, or at least not one that cares for animals before humans....
Anyway, let's finish this page! All these things happened and occurred completely oblivious to Ching dynasty rulers until it was far too late for them and for the Chinese people. Even in the days of the first republic government many Chinese scholars were still day dreaming of the glorious and beautiful past, instead of national defense. During the Second World War, there was a time the entire China made only one bullet a day... Yet, none of such self indulgence and the weakening sickness could compare with the evils of two centuries of opium drugs and opium wars, which had kept almost all young and old folks alike, lying hopelessly in reclining positions while their pockets were drained out of contents... For those who today wonder why and where those Chinese know how and civilization had gone to? They could soon enough be asking the same questions for the disappearance of human know how and human civilization some other days. But at least now Chinese people know where and why, which others still have to learn and to experience... and like the opening emperor of Chin, the Chinese people would take steps not to let mistakes of history repeat. They also know now intimately both the success and failure of the past and the absolute importance of leadership quality as well...
So, like I have said, everything in the universe regenerates. In the great motion of nature, a millennium passes just as if it's only a day. Human civilizations boom and collapse in such quick cycles. Great power corrupts greatly. Sometimes people hurt themselves. Sometimes they hurt themselves just to hurt others, or even corrupt themselves just to corrupt others. So absolute power corrupts absolutely. All is but a phenomenon of nature's dynamic motions in time. Great wisdom lies in the ability to know the timing and the courage to change time before all is too late. But the most important of all is the ability to learn from the experience of times. Time is also the social force that we live in, and in which we are driven or persuaded to move, and often to die hopelessly. Time is therefore the force of culture or civilization, which only men of great vision and would dare to change. Therefore sometimes such massive change is called a cultural revolution. We are now in the time of the 21st century, and unless great wisdom and courage appear again, we will not be hearing just the ticking, but the unimaginable explosion of three horrific time bombs. So think! And do not blame me for laying it down so nakedly!
